How Does APEL Work?

APEL Involves The Identification, Documentation, And Assessment Of Prior Experiential Learning (I.E., Knowledge, Skills, And Attitudes) To Determine The Extent To Which An Individual Has Achieved The Desired Learning Outcomes For Access To A Programme Of Study And/Or Award Of Credits.

APEL Allows You To Gain Credit For Your Prior Learning And Experience, Including Learning That Has Taken Place Outside Of Formal Educational Settings, Such As In The Workplace, Through Self-Study, Or Volunteering.

What are types of APEL available?

APEL A

(Accreditation of Prior Assessed Learning)

APEL A Accreditation of prior experiential learning (past work experience, courses and training attended, etc) for the purposes of Admission/Access into a programme of study

APEL C

(Accreditation of Prior Certified Learning)

APEL C Accreditation of prior experiential learning (past work experience, courses and training attended, etc) for the purposes of awarding Credits for courses within a programme of study. This will enable credit exemptions and shorter duration for you to complete the programme.

APEL Q

(Accreditation of Prior Qualification Learning)

APEL Q Accreditation of prior experiential learning (past work experience, courses and training attended, etc) for the purpose of awarding academic Qualifications.

How can APEL lead to an end award?

APEL enables you to an end award by accumulating credit for prior learning and experience from multiple APEL applications. This can be done by applying for APEL A, APEL C, and APEL Q qualifications at different levels of the Malaysian Qualifications Framework (MQF).

More Specific Examples

A software engineer in Malaysia with an APEL qualification in software engineering could get a job as a software engineer in Singapore. The Singapore Professional Engineers Board (PEB) recognizes APEL qualifications in software engineering, so the software engineer would not need to take any additional exams to work in Singapore.

A nurse in Malaysia with an APEL qualification in nursing could get a job as a nurse in the United Kingdom. The UK Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) recognizes APEL qualifications in nursing, so the nurse would not need to take any additional exams to work in the UK.

A teacher in Malaysia with an APEL qualification in education could get a job as a teacher in Australia. The Australian Teachers Registration Board (ATRB) recognizes APEL qualifications in education, so the teacher would not need to take any additional exams to work in Australia.
